Rebuild New Orleans
One must wonder about the logistics and worthiness of rebuilding such a city. The city sits under the level of the sea by 7-10+ feet. It does not take a rocket scientist to realize that a small wave and slightly torrential rain could be a problem. The pumps in the city - which are spread out all over the city - pump all the time. If you link to the NYTimes site http://www.nytimes.com and click "complete storm coverage" there are subsequent links that will show you the locations of the pumps and which are currently working. So, do we rebuild at taxpayers expense? Have they not mishandled our money already? Core of Engineers and FEMA money has been put to other things of "importance in LA" - things other than levies and pumps.
This was the subject of my poll this last week. Had a fairly great response - though look forward to more responders. * In fact, if you are not seeing the poll on the left of your screen when you click to my site, click your "refresh" button. (You have to scroll down a bit, but I am trying to get that fixed.)If that does not work - let me know. I have had quite a few visits, but not everyone voted.
Up until today - the vote was about 60% do not rebuild and 30% rebuild. Roughly 10% said "rebuild - but with reservations." Today, the poll reflects a 54% by 46% split. Do nots still have it, but rebuild with or without reservations comes in close second.
The comments were interesting: Comparison was made to Sodom and Gamorrah in the Bible; sin demans punishment; mercy over judgement; "we must rebuild for crawfish etoufette; and so forth.
Is it settled then? The "no's" have it? I don't know. We will have to see how it pans out. I know one thing - the tax payer should not be burdened with or punished by the decision.

I'm of the belief that if it happened once it could happen again. Hurricanes seem to be on the increase for whatever reason. Simple logic says it's not a good idea.
Great site. I fell into the category of those who think that the city should be rebuilt - with conditions. It seems like some of NO needs to exist to support the Mississippi river ports and some needs to exist to support the tourism in the French quarter. As a result, I think they should not rebuild in the areas that flooded deeply, dig those areas deeper for use as enormous water retention areas, use the soil dug out of the rention areas to raise the exising higher ground and build a smaller NO residential area on the new higher ground. My fear is that they will rebuild in the flooded areas and the rest of us will end up subidizing affordable flood insuance policies for residences that are guaranteed to flood with the next big Hurr.
